My Top 10 Power Rangers Moments

Power Rangers is a show that’s really a mixed bag. At its heights it can be really good, but at its depths it can be really bad. However, this isn’t the time to dwell on things we don’t like, because here is my top 10 favourite moments from the show’s over 700 episodes. I have missed a heap of great moments, but hey, I can only choose 10.

10. The NS-DT roll call

Starting out with something a little trivial I know, but it’s just something that I like. When it comes to teamups, I really look forward to the two teams getting together and doing their big group morph, followed by a giant explosion, and this teamup did it brilliantly. It was edited together really nicely in a quickshot pace, and the explosion at the end was just magnificent. Not an example of writing at its finest, but really enjoyable.

Watch from 1:10 onwards

9. Green With Evil

This makes it in mainly due to it being the first of its kind. I go over my thoughts on this arc in my commentary of the first episode, so I’ll be brief here. It didn’t make it higher in the list because the story was stretched out a little too much, but the way they managed to set the pace for evil ranger arcs in the franchise cannot be overstated.

8. Mack is a robot

This was quite a good reveal. Unlike in Samurai, where the ‘Jayden has a secret’ thing was overdone, in Operation Overdrive it was done quite well. There were clues that make sense in hindsight, but when they were aired weren’t too over the top and obvious. Making the big reveal part of a cliffhanger was a great idea and led to some interesting character moments where Mack questions his identity.

7. Reinforcements from the Future

What a wonderful teamup. It manages to have great character growth, good writing and some perfect moments.

6. Kimberly’s departure

Power Rangers had a poor history of saying farewell to rangers up to that point, and luckily with this story, it was done well. They set up her gymnastics, which has been part of her story since day one, as a reason for her leaving Angel Grove, and then with her attempts to deal with the consequences of such a decision. It was executed very well.

5. Master Org’s backstory

This is again expanded on a lot in my commentary for ‘The Master Returns’, but in summary, it is the first time I have really felt like the villain for a PR season has shown a real human side to his backstory. Love, jealousy and betrayal all play a part in his story, which makes it really interesting.

4. Frax’s speech to Nadira about hate

Just... wow. Frax’s story was wonderful about how he was stabbed in the back, and his speech about how people learn to hate was just beautiful. His hope that Nadira would be the one to break the cycle of hate between humans and mutants was marvellous and is a sign of what sort of pathos PR is capable of.

3. Kendrix’s death

While her resurrection was a bit of a cop out, her death was a huge moment for PR. She was the first ranger to have an on screen death, and for people who were watching not expecting it to happen... it was really surprising. Most of the time it’s known that they’ll find a way to get out of their particular scrape unscathed, so this suddenly happening... crazy.

2. Bulk and Skull’s last stand

Of course, ‘Countdown to Destruction’ will have to have an appearance in this list. While the other events of the episode were really good, the Z wave really comes across as a deux ex machina. Bulk and Skull’s moment in the spotlight as they lead the revolt against the invading armies in Angel Grove was just wondrous to behold and great to watch. It was just marvellous to see them stand up and make a difference.

1. Dr K, Gem and Gemma’s backstory.

This was introduced brilliantly in Dr K and further touched upon when Gem and Gemma become part of the cast. Dr K is my favourite episode in the franchise’s history because it shows just what the franchise is capable of.
